Christine O’Neill is a competent editor, translator, reviewer and interviewer. I have personal reasons to be grateful to her as I owe two books, Inductive Scrutinies and Joycean Murmoirs, to her initiative and efficiency; without her they would never have been undertaken.
Dr. O’Neill is also an excellent Joyce scholar with a book length study and numerous articles to her credit. Her contributions are substantial, unpretentious, to the point and offer useful practical and enjoyable insights. I collaborated with Christine O’Neill in the language-editing of an early scholarly work by Charles Malik, then a Lebanese student and later Foreign Minister, on the philosophy of Heidegger, whom Malik had met during a brief period of study abroad at Freiburg University. This work was edited by Prof. Nader El-Bizri and published by the German Orient Institute Beirut as part of its series “Beiruter Texte und Studien”. The edition was linguistically challenging in every respect, both in terms of Heidegger’s very specific jargon and given the fact that Malik himself was not a native speaker of either German or English. Nevertheless, Christine reliably managed to walk the necessary tightrope between linguistic adaptation and respect for the source character of the text at all times. She edited the text with admirable precision and impeccable accuracy.
